ATEC supported major OEMs in preparing for the OBD inspection introduced during vehicle inspections in Japan starting October 2024.Support for Building OBD Inspection Processes During Vehicle Inspections ATEC supported major OEMs in preparing for the OBD inspection introduced during vehicle inspections in Japan starting October 2024.We oversaw the establishment of a collaborative framework spanning the quality, legal, and IT departments of an OEM.
Resolving the Challenge of Inter-Departmental Collaboration in Regulatory Compliance
OBD inspections utilize a vehicle’s self-diagnostic function to detect emissions-related malfunctions during vehicle inspections, based on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s new regulations. At this OEM, multiple departments such as legal, quality, development, and IT were involved, so it was essential to clarify each department’s role and coordinate information. We visualized the workflow processes across each department and proposed the best course of action from the perspectives of process design and system integration.
Supporting Both Process Design and International Regulatory Compliance
Collaborative design between ECUs and diagnostic tools and regulatory compliance
With regard to the acquisition of DTCs required for OBD inspections, we tapped into our expertise in vehicle diagnostic communications, including CAN communication and UDS protocol, to create a protocol specification document for submission to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. To prevent different levels of DTCs being selected within the OEM for each target device, we established DTC selection guidelines for OEMs.In addition, taking into account alignment with the European e-PTI scheme, we support design efforts mindful of future international expansion.
Past results in handling UN-R156 and UN-R155
In addition to providing software update management compliant with UN-R156, ATEC is supporting the establishment of cybersecurity management systems based on UN-R155.We handle regulatory compliance at all stages of the vehicle lifecycle, including designing OTA update processes, organizing security requirements, and ensuring Cyber Security Management System (CSMS) compliance. We offer complete support for obtaining certifications both in Japan and abroad.
